Chinese New Year 2026: God of Pig Day is on Sunday, February 22, 2026
2026 Clear-Water Master Day
2026 is the Chinese year of the Red Fire Horse. The sixth lunar day of Chinese New Year festival is the Day of the Pig. It will be a big event to celebrate. 2026 Chinese New Year Day is on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Chinese New Year Day is a new moon day, which is the first lunar day. The sixth lunar day of the Pig Day is Sunday, February 22, 2026. This date is also the birthday of Grand Master Clear-Water (Qing-Shui Zushi).
In the agriculture society, before the toilet age, Chinese farmers called someone to clean the manure pit every 3 to 5 days. This is the day to clean the manure pit. Today, some families take care of New Year trashes and clean up rooms this day.
2026 Chinese New Year - God of Pig Day
In Taiwan, there is a contest for the title of the God of Pig at the temple of Clear-Water Grand Master (Qing-Shui Zushi Temple). The heaviest pig can win the title. The contest record of 2012 was 1061 kilograms, which is 2335 pounds. All the contest pigs will be killed, haircut, colored and shown their back on the truck. Because the God of Pig is so heavy, the owner can sell pork for more than a million Taiwanese dollar. The picture above is the champion pig.
This contest is nothing to do with the Clear-Water Grand Master who was a vegetarian monk. He wouldn't kill the animals. That's only a culture tradition. Hundred of years ago, people were often attacked by wild animals and wild mountain people. The residents prepared animal sacrifices to worship the God of Mountain and prayed for saftety during the Chinese New Year period. Now they borrow the big empty square of the Qing-Shui Zushi Temple for the event and the contest on the sixth day of the first lunar month.
The traditional Chinese opera will be invited and perform on the street for days to celebrate this special festival.
After New Year long holiday, most of companies open their business on 5th lunar day. Some stores start their business on the 6th lunar day. This is because they follow the Chinese New Year taboo, not to have trashes to sweep out in the first five New Year days. Therefore, they welcome and worship the God of Wealth on the 6th day, not the 5th day. After the welcome ceremony, they will explore firecrackers to expel the spirits of proverty.
According to Chinese genesis, the goddess Nu-Wa with snake body (2852-2738 B.C.) created chicken on the first day of the first lunar month, dog on the 2nd lunar day, pig on the 3rd lunar day, sheep on the 4th lunar day, ox on the 5th lunar day, and horse on the 6th lunar day. Therefore, February 22, 2026 is the birthday of the Horse.
